Hey, it's the second week of September, and if you've stepped outside before 7 a.m. lately you already know what I'm talking about. It's not cool yet. But it's not that anymore either. There's a morning in early September every year where you walk out to grab something from the car and you stop for a second because the air actually feels like air. That morning happened last week. We're on the other side of it.

I've been in Summerlin long enough to know that September is the month everybody around here quietly starts living again. Here's how it goes.

The Evenings Come Back First

The middle of the day is still doing its thing — we're going to see triple digits a few more times before this is over, and anybody who tells you otherwise hasn't lived here. But the back end of the day is completely different than it was three weeks ago.

Sunset is sliding earlier and the heat is letting go of the pavement faster. Which means around 7:30 the neighborhood turns back on. Dogs, strollers, kids on scooters, somebody's garage open with a game on. All summer my street is dead at that hour. Right now it's not.

If you have a pool, this is actually the best few weeks of the year for it. It finally cools off below bathwater at night but it's still warm enough that nobody's complaining getting in.

Friday Nights and Sundays

School's been back a month, which means Friday night high school football is in full swing, and I'd put a good Friday under the lights at a valley high school up against most things on the Strip. It's cheap, it's outside, and the weather is finally right for sitting in bleachers.

Sundays belong to the Raiders now, and the Aces are pushing through the end of their season downtown. Between those two and college ball on Saturdays, the couch has become a legitimate weekend destination again — which, after a summer of hiding from the sun indoors, feels a lot less like hiding and a lot more like a choice.

Get Back Outside Before Everybody Else Remembers

Red Rock is good again. Not "leave at 5 a.m. or die" good — actual, reasonable, mid-morning good. Same with the Wetlands Park trails out east, and Lake Mead, which is genuinely lovely this time of year and pretty empty on a weekday.

Do it now. By mid-October everybody in the valley has the same idea and the Red Rock scenic loop turns into a parking lot. Right now you get it mostly to yourself.

One holdover from summer: we're still in monsoon season for a few more weeks. Storms can still build fast in the afternoon. Don't drive into standing water, and stay out of the washes.

What's Coming Up

Life is Beautiful takes over 18 blocks of downtown the weekend of the 25th through the 27th. Even if you're not doing the festival, that whole area is worth a walk that weekend just for the murals and the energy.

And the real sign of fall around here: Gilcrease Orchard opens its pumpkin patch in late September. Apple cider donuts, wagon rides, a corn maze, and a whole lot of families doing the same photo. Two things to know — you need tickets in advance, they don't sell them at the gate, and they go up for sale a couple weeks before opening. Set a reminder or you'll miss it. We've missed it. The Payoff

This is the part of the year that makes the other part worth it. From about now through Thanksgiving, Las Vegas is close to unbeatable — patios, hikes, football, the mountains going gold in the evening, and you can leave a jacket in the car and mostly not need it.

If you've been thinking about a move and you were waiting for it to be livable enough to actually go look at neighborhoods, this is your window. Walk them in the evening. That's when you find out what a street is really like.

Either way, get outside this month. That's the whole point of putting up with August.

If you want a hand figuring out where in the valley you'd actually want to live, reach out to The Kessler Team LV — we're here year-round and we know the difference between every one of these neighborhoods on a Tuesday night.
