THIS is why we put up with Summer
Every year in early March, there’s a moment when living in Las Vegas makes complete sense again. It usually happens sometime in the evening. The sun is still out later than you expect, the air is comfortable, and you realize you’ve been outside for a while without thinking about the temperature once.
That’s when it hits. This is why we put up with summer.
The extremes of July and August are real. We joke about frying eggs on the sidewalk and sprinting across parking lots, but there’s nothing subtle about desert heat. And yet, this stretch of early spring makes it all feel worth it. The days are warm without being aggressive, the mornings are crisp enough for a light jacket, and the evenings seem to stretch just long enough to slow everything down.
This is when patio season becomes effortless. Coffee outside in the morning feels natural instead of ambitious. Dinner reservations turn into lingering conversations because nobody wants to head indoors. Backyard spaces finally get used the way they were meant to be used. String lights come on at dusk, windows stay open, and the city feels breathable again.
The desert joins in too. Red Rock Canyon looks richer in color this time of year, especially if we’ve had a little winter rain. Subtle greens appear against the red and tan landscape, and the mountains seem sharper in the softer spring light. It’s not dramatic like other parts of the country, but it’s noticeable if you live here.
There’s also an energy shift across the city. College basketball fills sports bars. Event calendars start picking up. Weekend plans happen without needing to revolve around air conditioning. You see more people outside in neighborhoods, at parks, walking dogs after dinner. Las Vegas feels active without feeling overwhelming.
That’s the balance we wait for.
By late spring, the pace accelerates. Visitors increase, pool season takes over, and the calendar fills up quickly. But right now, there’s room to enjoy the city without competing with it. It’s social without being chaotic, lively without being exhausting.
This short window is the reward for enduring the harsher months. It’s the reminder that desert living comes with its own rhythm. The intensity of summer makes this season feel earned. You appreciate it more because you know what’s coming.
And every year, without fail, early March delivers that same quiet realization. Living here works. Not because it’s always easy, but because when it’s good, it’s really good.
That’s why we put up with summer.
